Busting 7 Bridal Myths: Separating Fact from Fiction
The world of bridal fashion is filled with misconceptions that can often leave brides feeling overwhelmed and confused. Let’s debunk some of the most common wedding dress myths and empower you to make informed decisions as you begin your wedding dress journey.
Myth 1: The Sample Size Myth
One of the most pervasive bridal myths is the notion that you need to be a specific size to look stunning in a wedding dress (thanks social media). I believe that every bride wants to look beautiful, and there’s a perfect dress out there for everyone’s shape and size. At JRW Bridal, we highly value celebrating individuality. We offer a range of sizes and customisation options to ensure that every bride feels confident and radiant on her special day.
Myth 2: All White is the Best Option
While white has long been the traditional colour for wedding dresses, the modern bride has more freedom than ever before. Ivory (currently the most popular), cream, blush, champagne, and even soft hues of blue and grey are all popular choices.
The colour of your dress should complement your skin tone, wedding theme, and personal style. Don’t be afraid to experiment and find a colour that makes you feel truly yourself.
Several of my custom brides have come to me to create their unique visions; Chiara, opted for a soft blush pink minimalistic duchess satin wedding dress, Michaela pink and ivory, Lauren powder blue and ivory lace, Maddison loved soft pastels, and Cassiopia a burgundy and black wedding dress for their Wedding Days.
One of my favourite Coco Chanel quotes is “In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different!” Dare to be different if that is your vibe! The colour of your dress should complement your skin tone, wedding theme, and personal style. Don’t be afraid to experiment and find a colour that makes you feel truly YOU.
Myth 3: You Must Wear a Veil
A veil can be a beautiful and elegant accessory (and I love creating personalised veils), but it’s certainly not a requirement. Many brides opt for other headpieces, such as tiaras, crowns, or floral hair accessories. You can even choose to go completely bareheaded. The most important thing is to feel comfortable and confident in your choice. If a veil isn’t your style, don’t feel pressured to wear one.
I’m currently working with a custom bride on a stunning sheer organza cape that attaches to matching puff sleeves as a veil alternative and it looks absolutely stunning! All are detachable and can be worn together or separately during the wedding celebrations.
Myth 4: The Alteration Anxiety
While alterations are often necessary to achieve the perfect fit, they don’t have to be a source of stress, if you are better informed. A skilled seamstress can work wonders, transforming an “off the rack” standard size gown into a perfect custom-fit masterpiece.
When choosing a bridal boutique, inquire about their alteration services, pricing, and timeframe. Many boutiques offer competitive rates and can provide recommendations for trusted seamstresses that cater to different budget levels. My Perth stockist, Bridal by Aubrey Rose, works in this way and my Brisbane stockist, The Bridehouse, has her own alterations specialists on site!
Myth 5: You can only wear your Wedding Dress once
The notion that a wedding dress can only be worn once is being challenged with the fabulous bridal trend of separates and detachable elements. With the increase in civil ceremonies, destination weddings, and second marriages, more brides are choosing more versatile and sustainable bridal wear that can be worn again and again.
If you love your dress and want to cherish it beyond your wedding day, consider these options or reach out if you’d love to discover more.
Myth 6: Trend or Tradition?
While it’s fun to stay updated on bridal fashion trends, it’s essential to choose a dress that reflects your personal style. Focus on selecting a gown that makes you feel confident, beautiful, and authentically you. A classic silhouette with modern details can be a winning combination. See one of my earlier blogs on this topic here.
Myth 7: Designer Dreams and Budget Realities
Many brides believe that designer wedding dresses are out of their budget. However, with careful planning and research, it’s possible to find a stunning designer gown that fits within your budget. Consider shopping off-season, looking for sample sales, or exploring financing options. This is an option I offer my Custom brides, and I’ve had a few brides that set up a monthly debit order over a 12–24-month period, so that they can create a wedding dress that they’ve always dreamt of!
Remember, your wedding day is about celebrating your love with the people who matter most. Don’t let bridal myths overshadow your vision. Trust your instincts, embrace your individuality, and choose a dress that makes you feel like the radiant bride you want to be.
