Behind the Seams of our Custom Wedding Dresses
When you scroll through Pinterest and Instagram and see finished, breathtaking custom wedding dresses flowing flawlessly down the aisle, it is easy to forget that the dress was once nothing more than an idea, a pencil sketch, and a roll of plain fabric.
I often talk about my “Golden Rule” of booking your wedding dress 12+ months in advance to avoid “Dress Stress” but today, I want to take you “Behind the Seams”. I want to show you exactly why that timeline exists, what my hands are doing during those twelve months, and why true bridal artistry (whether completely custom or beautifully adapted) is a labour-intensive architectural process that simply cannot be rushed.
For many of our Custom Wedding Dresses the Laces don’t even exist yet.
When a bride steps into a traditional Perth bridal boutique, the fabrics are already determined. They sit on a rack, finished and waiting. But for a JRW couture bride, the fabric journey can start on a blank page in my studio.
True luxury couture isn’t just about tailoring a dress to your exact measurements, it is about creating custom textile artistry from scratch. For many of my JRW brides, the exclusive laces, unique embroidery layouts, and bespoke beaded placements we use don’t exist anywhere else in the world.
When we map out a bespoke gown, we are often designing the physical textile itself:
- Sketching original vine or floral patterns.
- Determining the exact placement of thousands of hand-stitched pearls or clear crystal beads so they catch the sunlight perfectly.
- Working meticulously with master Indian embroiderers and artisans to bring these custom textiles to life.
This level of hand-craftsmanship takes months of highly precise, delicate labour before the fabric is even ready to be cut. When you give your gown a full year, you are buying the luxury of time required for genuine, unhurried work of art.
Not Just an Alteration: The Magic Behind Customising Our RTW Collections
I am incredibly passionate about making high-end design accessible to brides with different investment levels. That is why I love offering my brides the option to select a wedding dress from my Ready-to-Wear (RTW) Collections, including the select designs found at our Perth stockist Bridal by Aubrey Rose and tailoring it to their individual style.
However, there is a common misconception that personalising an RTW gown is a simple, quick alteration. In reality, significant design changes require some pattern-making restructuring.
If you choose a JRW Bridal, RTW gown but want to alter the neckline from a plunging V to a classic sweetheart, add a bespoke off-the-shoulder sleeve, or merge the bodice of one gown with the skirt of another, we aren’t just cutting fabric—we are altering the architectural blueprint of the dress.
Pattern-making is a skill. A single centimetre of adjustment to a neckline completely shifts the balance, support, and structural integrity of the entire bodice. To do this correctly, we must:
- Adjust the original pattern pieces.
- Engineer a new, custom-graded pattern layout.
- Cut and construct a physical mock-up (toile) to test the new structural lines.
It is a beautiful, deeply technical process that ensures your JRW customised RTW dress fits seamlessly and supports you flawlessly on your day, but it is a process that requires our time.
The wedding gown was absolutely stunning, and you made the process feel seamless from the beginning to the end. Every step of the process was carefully considered, from the choices in colour, cut, fabric, beadwork, etc. I felt that Jo guided me well with each decision and she was very thorough. This made the process feel easy and I was excited to see the next stage every time there was progress… For such a special occasion such as my wedding, I knew I wanted something custom made to reflect who I am, my style and also be flattering at the same time. You nailed my vision Jo and I will cherish my wedding gown forever.

Securing Your Place in the Production Schedule
I do limit our high-end bridal craftsmanship as it’s limited by the number of hours in a day and the attention that each one deserves. We dedicate so much focused, individual attention to the pattern-making and textile creation of every single dress, that our production calendar fills up incredibly fast.
If you are planning a 2027 or 2028 wedding, it might feel like your date is a lifetime away. But in the world of custom textiles and bespoke pattern-making, the upcoming seasons are already booking up, and organised brides are securing their creations now.
I believe that your wedding dress journey shouldn’t feel like an accelerated race against the clock, it should feel like an effortless, unforgettable luxury.
Are you ready to see what is possible for your gown? Book in your free 15-minute Discovery Call here or come chat with me at Sandalford Winery on the 5th of July. Let’s make something beautiful together.
